Classical Education Reading List: Modern

4th graders should be studying Early Modern times (1850-Present). Stories should be read chronologically in order listed below. In addition to asking for suggestions from children's librarian, read stories and poems by, about, or from the following:

Robert Louis Stevenson, all the novels
Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
Heidi by Johann Spyri
Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi (not the abridged Disney version)
HG Wells, all the novels
Louisa May Alcott, all the novels
Andrew Lang, all the novels
Frances Hodgson Burnett, all the novels
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Peter Pan and all the Plays by James Barrie
Rudyard Kipling, Just So Stories and The Jungle Books
Beatrix Potter, all the novels
Laura Ingalls Wilder, all the novels
Walter de la Mare, collected poems
Carl Sandburg, collected poems
John Ciardi, collected poems
TS Eliot, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats

(For the readings lists for the other grammar years I linked to the specific edition recommended in the Well Trained Mind. At this level I figured it was not as important but check her list if you are having trouble finding a version you like at the appropriate level).
