Interesting Facts on public schooling

Various facts I gathered from some book I read - probably by John Holt

The average high school day has 6 hrs and 20 minutes of which 5 hrs and 30 minutes are instructional.

General agreement that 25% of elementary school time is transition.

In 1900 kids school was in session 143.7 days and the average number of days attended was 98.
In 2003 school is in session 180 days.

Secondary schools (jr high?) spend 41% of day on core academic subjects.

In 1896 student subjects included classical, scientific, English, Commercial.
In 1918 they added health and ethics
